✦ Alpha software
Quoter is in alpha — an early, unfinished product released for testing. Features, the way we handle data, and this policy may all change before public launch, sometimes without notice. Data you create may occasionally be lost, reset, or migrated as we build. By using Quoter during this period you acknowledge it is pre-release software and that you use it at your own risk.
Quoter is an app for discovering and sharing quotes from books, film, theatre, poetry, music and spoken word. It is built and operated as an independent project, currently in alpha testing.
Account. When you create an account we collect your email address, a username you choose, and the password you set (stored securely — we never see it in plain text). If you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive only what those services share with us: typically your email and name. Content you create. As you use the app we store the things you do: quotes you like, save, or pin; writers and works you favourite; your reading status; people you follow and who follow you; and any quotes you submit for review. Profile photos. If you upload a profile picture or a cover photo, we store those images. They are visible to other users. Taste profile. To personalise your feed and recommendations, we build a profile of your taste from your activity in the app and from any services you choose to connect (see below).
Connecting any of these is entirely optional, and you can disconnect them at any time from Settings → Integrations. Spotify. If you connect Spotify, we read your top tracks and recently-played music to understand your taste and tailor recommendations. We do not post anything to your Spotify account or access your playlists beyond this. Letterboxd. If you import a Letterboxd file, you upload your exported film-ratings file (ratings.csv) and we use those ratings to shape what Quoter recommends. Book information. We fetch book details and cover images from Open Library, a public catalogue, when you search for or display works. This does not share your personal data with them.
Your data is used to make Quoter work — to show you your profile, your saves, your feed, your followers, and recommendations shaped by your taste. We do not sell your data. We do not share it with advertisers. We do not use it for any purpose other than running and improving the app. We may use your email to send important account notifications, such as password resets. We will not send you marketing email without your explicit consent.
We use Vercel Analytics and Vercel Speed Insights to understand how the app is used and to monitor performance (for example, which pages are visited and how quickly they load). These are privacy-focused tools that do not use advertising cookies and do not sell your data. They collect anonymised usage and performance information so we can fix problems and improve the app.
Quoter uses Supabase (a hosted database and authentication service) to store your data, and Vercel to host the app. Both are reputable providers with strong security practices. Depending on service configuration, data may be stored on servers in the European Union or the United States.
We use a session token, stored in your browser, to keep you logged in. We use the privacy-focused analytics described above. We do not use advertising cookies or third-party advertising trackers.
Quoter is not directed at children. You must be at least 13 years old (or the minimum age of digital consent in your country, if higher) to create an account. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact us and we will delete it.
You can delete your account at any time from Settings → Account. This permanently removes your profile and associated data. You can update or correct your information from your profile and settings at any time. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights over your data (such as access, correction, export, or erasure). To exercise any of these, or to ask us to delete something specific, contact us.
As Quoter develops, this policy will be updated. We will note significant changes here and update the date above. Continued use of the app after changes means you accept the updated policy.
